- Buy a new Bible and start reading from it each day. Which translation to use or “is best” is a matter of personal preference. I’ve migrated from the NIV to the NASB, to the NKJV and then the Amplified Bible, but now am using the New Living Translation primarily.
- Choose a “Read the Bible in a Year” plan and start following it. Some have you read straight through the Bible while others incorporate a few Old Testament verses, some New Testament ones, and one from the Psalms. In 2025, my wife decided to read through the Bible chronologically, and really enjoyed doing that.
- Start reading Christian books, fiction or non-fiction. The Practice of the Presence of God (Brother Lawrence), The Pursuit of God (A.W. Tozer) and Reflections on the Existence of God (Simmons) are ones I’ve enjoyed. Kindle Unlimited works well for me.
- Invest in a Bible commentary or two to help you “dig deeper” into certain Bible verses or books. Studylight.org has a number of free ones.
- Commit to learning about one or more topics in the Bible, such as grace, faith, forgiveness, salvation, how to love others, how to pray, etc.
- Pray more during each day.
- Learn how to meditate on or pray through Scripture (Donald Whitney has a good book on this)
- Memorize a Bible verse per week
- Set aside 10 minutes each day and go to a quiet place where you earnestly seek God and then act on what He seems to be communicating to you
- Seek to have fellowship with God the Father and the Son as per 1 John
- Repent more often
- Seek to improve your relationships with certain family members or friends by loving them more, forgiving them more, and/or encouraging them more
- Volunteer or serve in some capacity in your church
- Go on a missions trip through your church.
- Tithe more to your church and Christian organizations
- Identify your spiritual gifts and work on developing them
- Join a Bible study group
- Join a prayer group where you share requests and pray for one another
- Join an accountability group for help with issues you are struggling with
- Spend less time on social media (and more in God’s Word or Christian podcasts/websites)
- Complain less and be thankful more
- Worry less and don’t be anxious; cast your cares upon the Lord
- Be more heavenly minded than earthly minded
- Give an encouraging word to someone each day (1 Thes 5:11)
- Become a better Christian example at your place of work
- Try witnessing to a few people this year
