This morning I decided to go to our nearby Verizon store to buy a new phone. I did this only because the battery in my old one was no longer holding a charge for very long. I arrived at 10:00 am when the store opened. Only one person – a lady in her 50’s or so – was working there and there were no other customers.

After several minutes of small talk, the employee said that she had become tired of her 5:00 am commute to Denver and took a two-year break to work for a ministry. This comment delighted my ears and gave me an opportunity to discuss spiritual issues with her.

I asked her which ministry she had worked for, but didn’t recognize the name she mentioned. I then asked her what church she goes to, and to my surprise she said “Rocky Mountain Calvary,” which is where our family attends.

Thinking she might be a Christian, I asked her, “So, you probably know what the term ‘Christian’ means? To my (second) surprise, she had a blank look on her face and didn’t say a thing. I then followed up with this question, “Do you know what the terms ‘salvation’ or ‘believer’ mean? Again, no response, then she slowly shook her head “no.” I told her that I’d talk to her about it when I returned, for she needed 30-45 more minutes to transfer the data on my old phone to the new one.

When I got home, I decided to quickly type up a document that I could give to her on how to become a Christian.

A few hours later when I returned to the store to pick up my new phone, there were other employees and customers there, so I didn’t have a chance to talk with her about salvation. However, after she gave me my new phone, I handed her the document I had written and said she could read it if she wanted to.

But the story doesn’t end there…Later that day, I went back to the store to return some battery charging cables I decided I didn’t need. To my (third) surprise, this employee was not as friendly as she was before, and even acted like we had never met. Had she read my document and become “turned off” by it? Had she thrown it in the trash shortly after I had left the store before? I did see a nearly full trash container about six feet behind her next to the back wall, and looked to see if my document had been tossed there, but couldn’t tell. All I can do is hope that she reads it, and if I by chance see her at church, that she has a friendly demeanor towards me. I’ll pray that God works in her heart to read the document if she has not thrown it away, to understand it, and then seek to become a Christian.
