While I was studying verses on prayer, I came across a verse – actually three short verses – that stood out to me, and I thought would make for a great “life verse.”
What is a life verse you ask?
Good question. If you search the web on this, you’ll find a few interpretations, but the one that made the most sense to me is this one:
“An inspirational motto or lifelong mission statement.”
A motto is “a short sentence or phrase chosen as encapsulating the beliefs or ideals guiding an individual, family, or institution.”
Thus, a life verse is a Bible verse, or set of verses, that resonate with you (because they capture what you believe to be true or are especially important to you), and may inspire and guide you in how you should live.
Now, as you can see from my summary of a life verse, choosing one is a personal decision, for a verse that resonates with one person may not resonate with you. As a result, I’m in no position to choose one for you. Rather, I’m simply offering you an idea for your consideration.
Do I plan to make this my life verse?
Another great question! I already have one (I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some), and I don’t see me changing this one.
On the other hand, why limit a life verse to only one (or one set)? There are probably a number of verses in the Bible that may have special meaning to you, and are worth committing to memory in order to better live by them.
In that light, I plan to memorize the one below and will try to live by it the best I can, for it well represents how I would like to live my life going forward (always being joyful, always be thanking, always praying, and always seeking to do God’s will not mine).
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NAS)
16 Rejoice always; 17 pray without ceasing; 18 in everything give thanks;
for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
