Would you like an inexpensive and simple tool to help you read your Bible more often and with greater interest? Would you like to be able to more easily find verses that relate to important topics, such as how to become a Christian, how a Christian should live or how to pray? If you do, then I have a solution for you. What is it? Colored pencils.
Now, for those of you who never highlight or underline anything you read, this solution may not work for you. But for those who do, I think you’ll like it.
You don’t have to follow the system I use, but it has worked well for me. Here’s how it works. When I read the Bible, there are several issues I want to focus my attention on. They are:
- How a person becomes a Christian, or salvation
- How a Christian should live
- How to pray
- Who God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are
- Fulfilled prophecies (which sets the Bible apart from other religious books)
Whenever I read a verse that relates to one of these topics, I use a designated colored pencil to underline that verse (or verses).
- Salvation = Blue (I use my favorite color for my favorite topic)
- How a Christian should live = Orange
- How to pray = Purple
- Who God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are = Green
- Prophecy = Pink
Below is a picture of the colored pencils I use and a few verses I’ve underlined. I also use a pencil to circle the number of any verse that I’d like to memorize, and a yellow highlighter for any other item of interest that falls outside the five above.

You might give this a try and see if it makes your Bible reading more interesting and enjoyable as it has for me.
