Last fall I wrote several posts about our experience in witnessing to two Mormon Missionary women, but I did not mention my relationship with another Mormon I had become friends with. This post is an update on all three.
To my disappointment, it appears that we did not make any “headway” with the two Mormon Missionary women we met with a half dozen times last fall. I’ve checked their Facebook pages a few times since then, and both have continued to post positive material about Mormonism.
However, I have good news to report on my Mormon friend. Largely through his own research into the history of Mormonism and especially the polygamous relationships of Joseph Smith, he became concerned with and then angry over who Joseph Smith really was, and the deception he saw from within the Mormon church. Based upon this, he left the Mormon church, and informed his parents of his decision. When he gave reasons to his father for leaving the church, he was surprised that his father knew some of the bad things Joseph Smith had done and that had been downplayed or covered up by the Mormon church, but chose to ignore this as he was simply too deep into the Mormon church to make a change. My friend and his family are now attending a protestant church and he’s “so glad to be free of the trap of Mormonism!”
In addition, I had several opportunities to witness over the phone to my friend, and from our recent conversations it sounds like he may well be a Christian. God is richly blessing him now, as he recently gained new and much better employment (he’ll be working with several Christians too) and will be relocating to a more desirable area in which to live.
Although our experience with the Mormon Missionary women had a bad ending, my experience with my Mormon friend had a wonderful ending. Further, it gives me hope that other Mormons who take the time to question their religion and who Joseph Smith really was may also escape from the deceptive trap that they are in, and experience what it means to be a Christian.
