OVERVIEW OF BOOK
If you’ve ever wondered how Christian churches got started two thousand years ago, the book of Acts in the Bible shows us the answer. This book, written by Doctor Luke (who also wrote the book of Luke), details the spread of Christianity by Jesus’ disciples after Jesus gave them the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit enabled these disciples with the power to speak in other languages, perform miracles, and boldly proclaim the good news about Jesus Christ (hence the image). And what was this good news? That Jesus Christ is the Messiah, He forgives people from their sins, and He alone gives people true peace with God. Much of the book details the accounts of Peter, Stephen, Philip and Paul as they told others the good news. The book also shows how people were to respond upon hearing it – by turning from their sinful way of life to God, and becoming baptized.
SALVATION-RELATED VERSES
The book of Acts contains a number of verses about salvation and baptism. I will use many of these verses to answer a small number of questions about salvation in my next two posts.
In Acts – Part 2 of 3, I will answer the question of whether “calling upon the name of the Lord” is all a person must do to become saved. Can it really be this simple, and this easy?
In Acts – Part 3 of 3, I’ll tackle the controversial issue of whether baptism is also required for salvation, for some churches believe this. Plus, I’ll comment on whether belief in the gospel and repentance of sins are required for a person to become a Christian.
